Structure and Properties of the Hollow Cast Iron Castings Formed by Continuous Cyclic Freeze Casting

Abstract

The relation between the mechanical properties and the structural changes across the wall thickness is studied for hollow thin-walled castings made of gray cast iron with flaked graphite, which are formed by continuous cyclic freeze casting without the use of a rod. Ultimate tensile strength σu, HB Brinell hardness, HRB Rockwell hardness, and microhardness are determined in the zones of dendritic crystals and eutectic matrix. At the same Brinell hardness, σu of the castings made of the cast iron under study is shown to be significantly higher than that of the castings made of gray cast irons poured into sand–clay molds.
