Twiddeling and Twaddeling in the Weeptime of Clients: Avoidable Injustice

Stoesz (2020) argues that “licensed occupations in human services…[have] evolved as cartels whose primary objective is amplifying their membership’s influence, income, and benefits: influences assured by [accreditation processes, insurance payments, restriction in hiring to licensed professionals]” (p. 2). Indeed, all professions are cartels. As he notes, organizations such as the National Association of Social Workers and the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE, 2015) with the help of the Council for Higher Education maintain a monopoly on education, training, and licensing. He links mediocrity of services to this meritocracy and emphasizes the complicity of social work education programs in creating and maintaining it. Related goal displacement is encouraged by the ongoing invasion of political and business mentalities into higher education in which professional schools of social work are housed (Barzun, 1992; Veblan, 1993).
