The university’s fragile role in fostering societal resilience by facilitating the development of community-engaged professionalism

ABSTRACT

The university plays an essential role in the education and social development of professionals. This role is vulnerable in that state support is required to foster sustainability and resilience, especially as the university goes about its job of assuring community-focused professionals. Vulnerability theory and its correlate, resilience, offer a lens to look at the university’s responsibility to train professionals who act in the best interest of the community. In the past decades, “professional identity formation” has been a primary focus of medical education. Professional training in key “core competencies” demand development of the character traits, commitments, and skills that are essential to the appropriate knowledge, ethical behaviours, social awareness, and community focus necessary for the engaged healthcare professional. The Covid-19 pandemic has placed previously unconsidered stressors on the university and in doing so, has unmasked a variety of system-generated vulnerabilities. As the university attempts to remain solvent, it has responded so as to decrease the ability of the academic professional to engage in social justice activities. This paper addresses universities’ social justice commitment to their academic (professional) faculty and makes recommendations that Universities might undertake to support their own community-focused commitments.
