Optimum installation of economizer, air heater, and flue gas dryer in biomass boiler

Heat recovery devices that may be installed in biomass boiler are economizer, air heater, and flue gas dryer. Economizer increases feed water temperature, air heater increases air temperature before combustion, and flue gas dryer decreases fuel moisture content. Each of them can equally increase boiler efficiency. Since all of them require heat transfer from flue gas produced by combustion of biomass fuel, there are limits to the sizes of these devices if they are installed together. In this paper, boiler and flue gas dryer models are used to determine the optimum installation that minimizes the total installation cost in biomass boiler. Furthermore, it is shown by simulation that, if the nominal unit costs of air heater and economizer are 100 $/m2 and 120 $/m2, the unit cost of flue gas dryer must be less than 65 $/(kg/h) in order for its integration in the boiler system to be economically justified.
