Enhancement of the band-gap characteristics in disordered elastic metamaterial multi-span beams: Theory and experiment

The effects of the disordered local resonators on the vibration band-gap characteristics of the elastic metamaterial multi-span beams are investigated and validated by the vibration experiments. Compared with the complete periodic elastic metamaterial multi-span beams, it is demonstrated that the disordered periodic ones can broaden the band-gaps and even generate new local resonance band-gaps. Furthermore, the coupling of the multiple local resonance band-gaps with the Bragg scattering ones can be realized by properly adjusting the difference in the natural frequencies of the disordered local resonators. Consequently, the vibration suppression and noise reduction performance of the elastic metamaterial multi-span beams can be enhanced by a proper disorder design of the resonators.
