Oxygen sensors play a vital role in ensuring the safety of employees and users at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. While most oxygen sensors have accurate and linear responses in nitrogen/argon environments, studies have highlighted a phenomenon in helium-air mixtures with certain types of oxygen sensors. A controlled experiment was performed to observe the behavior of two types of oxygen sensors: orifice and membrane. The orifice sensor showed a large deviation of up to 13% of measured reading above the actual oxygen content in the helium-air mixture test, while the membrane sensor remained accurate to within 3% of the actual value throughout its range.
