Cover: A young female Cape pangolin (Smutsia temminckii) rescued from poachers is held by a ranger at Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique. Myriad motivations and behaviors drive consumption of wildlife, from subsistence to social status. Pangolins are illegally killed for their meat and scales. Tracking and understanding consumer behavior and motivations can inform measures to combat this threat to biodiversity. In a special section on conservation culturomics, Li et al. (pages xx‐xx) examined social media to rapidly and cost‐effectively determine motivations for the purchase of tiger bone wine, a medicinal tonic. Using an expert‐elicitation approach, Walters et al. developed a typology of common motivations held by consumers of wildlife (pages xxx‐xxx).

Photographer: Jen Guyton is a photographer and ecologist with a passion for telling stories at the junction of global environmental change and human culture. Jen is a National Geographic Explorer, 2019 Fulbright‐National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellow in Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique, and a Fellow with the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP). She has a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from Princeton University. Her photos have been published in National Geographic Online, BBC Wildlife Magazine, biographic, and have been honored in Wildlife Photographer of the Year and Nature's Best. Jen is currently based near Frankfurt, Germany.
