Abstract

Collection practices involve meticulous organization and structuring of information informed by considerations like discovery and use. Such methods hold lessons for designers who also practice informal ways of structuring and giving meaning to content. In fact, since the mid-nineties, a distinct genre of design books has emerged that is predicated on designers working with collections. This paper explores these relationships by sharing insights from an elective held at Parsons School of Design that was created to allow undergraduate communication design students to learn more about the formal collections-building process. From these lessons, students created their own collections in an aggregated, printed book which afforded them the opportunity to interrogate the structure of descriptive data and the complexities of forming a narrative. The aim is for designers to be able to participate more fully in describing and structuring content for use and, thereby, extend the breadth of their design practice.
