The demand of economic and environmentally friendly materials for construction has risen in the last few decades owing to global climate change. With that perspective, the special issue on “Innovative Materials for Damage Mitigation in Civil Engineering” in the International Journal of Damage Mechanics (IJDM) was launched. The competitively selected papers in this special issue include exploration of materials from both the environment friendly (i.e. vegetation, biochar, bacteria) and design (segmented concrete and concrete filled steel tubes) perspectives. This special issue includes damage mitigation in various construction materials such as concrete, steel and soil. Overall, it can be concluded that there is a need to tailor the design process of materials to maximize their impact on damage mitigation in certain civil engineering infrastructure.
