Using Authentic Materials to Drive Pedagogy: The Example of Discourse Maps

Scholars and practitioners of business and professional communication have long recognized that relying only on textbooks cannot adequately prepare students to recognize and competently address the discourse demands of the workplace (Bhatia, 2008; Bremner, 2008). These deficiencies occur across disciplines, and the author of our lead article argues that there is a need for more effective research at authentic sites of professional discourse. In particular, the study reported here makes a unique contribution to business and professional communication pedagogy by showing how discourse maps, in conjunction with genre and discourse analysis, can be used to provide an authentic professional experience, in this case the negotiation of a contract.
