Explaining the ways we are praiseworthy or criticizable through exercising our agency is a central task of theories of intelligent agency. Very often theories of this are cast as theories of rationality. To be rational is to exercise one’s agency well and to be irrational is to exercise one’s agency badly. Being rational or irrational is the sort of agential achievement or failing we want to explain in our pursuit of understanding intelligent agency. At any rate, these are the phenomena that I hoped to better understand by writing The Importance of Being Rational.
