Abstract

Government mandated social distancing introduced to break transmission of an airborne virus (COVID-19) between mid-March and mid-June 2020 in the UK lead to inevitable behavioural changes amongst city residents. Additionally, local government put in place measures designed to protect the health of citizens and enable behaviour deemed appropriate under pandemic conditions. Amongst other things, measures entailed adjusting spaces to ensure the safety of users in the public realm. This contribution uses an interpretive phenomenological analysis approach to tell an individual’s story of how public space has been (temporarily) reshaped. It concludes with some initial reflections and speculations on potential opportunities for planning and urban design to enhance resiliency of urbanized areas in future.
