Recent field exploration in connection with a taxonomic revision of Sonerila (Melastomataceae, tribe Sonerileae) in India resulted in the discovery of an undescribed species from the southern Western Ghats. Here we describe this new species as Sonerila stolonifera and compare it to Sonerila vatphouensis Munzinger & C.V.Martin and S. janakiana Ratheesh, Sunil & Sivad., which are similar in their foliar dimorphism and stoloniferous habit. We also provide photographic images, a distribution map, information on habitat and ecology, and a conservation assessment.
