Abstract:

This article studies the reason for which Alfonso x el Sabio condemns demonic necromantic practices associated with Solomonic magic in cantiga 125. The Galician-Portuguese testimony of the cantiga along with the miniatures featured by the Códice rico provide us with a descriptive account on necromancy performed by the clergy. This emphasis put forth by the authors of these pieces can be explained if we take into account the other side of Solomonic magic, that is, the angelology represented in the Liber Razielis, which was one of the books that the Alfonsine writers preserved and translated.
