more commonplace for the study of Late Antiquity. Stoner also is careful to demark and discuss important nuances throughout her thematic chapters. For example, “intentional heirlooms” are objects that were passed down meaningfully, especially during specific moments during the life course, such as marriage. Other objects, such as archives, might simply accumulate over time (e.g. Stoner 2019: 7). While such material accumulations also might be passed down through generations, they offer a less intentional and emotionally charged form of heirloom and can thus be understood as “unintentional heirlooms.” Stoner vigilantly notes the overlaps between her themes throughout her work: heirlooms and souvenirs often are bestowed as gifts and gifts might be passed down generationally as heirlooms. In sum, Stoner has written a wonderful book about object circulation and the emotions that accumulate as an object passes through the various social interactions of its life-history. Her argumentation and illustrations are compelling and her prose is fluid. Her book was a pleasure to read. Where her book falls short, however, is in placing these object biographies within the home—a home that is both nowhere and everywhere in Late Antiquity. Context, as we know from the work of Lavan and Swift as well as of Ian Hodder, matters. I am not ready to let go of context entirely, but I nevertheless am happy to follow Stoner as she reveals a single object’s life-history among various people, settings, and emotions. Her title and thesis may be misplaced but her research and theorizations most certainly are not. Her book, then, is well worth reading. Pp。xxiii + 338 + 160 个板。ISBN:9789957-85437-9
