Indigenous Perspectives in Eighteenth-Century Literature

Abstract:

Attracting Indigenous scholars to the study of eighteenth-century literature is needed to open the discipline and the university itself to a future more reflective of scholarly findings and subject matter repositioned by Indigenous perspectives, historical and literary. An increase in Indigenous scholars is considered among other measures suggested by fellow CSECS and Early Americanist scholars, and by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (2015). The discipline can become more welcoming by valorizing collaborative scholarship with teachers of resurgent Indigenous languages, and by broadening normative objects of study to include those linked to existing Indigenous communities and geographic sites. An attempt to geographically locate and dialogically read Indigenous perspectives in Daniel Defoe’s Captain Singleton (1720) concludes with a textually-generated Indigenous perspective on Defoe’s two central pirates, who see themselves not as heroes but as historically stranded, ungrounded and offshore with their ill-gotten wealth and no place else to go.
