Crystal structure and luminescent properties of a trimetallic diphosphate phosphor K2Mg2Sr3(P2O7)3:Eu2+,Mn2+

New mixed trimetallic diphosphate K2Mg2Sr3(P2O7)3 was successfully synthesized by the traditional solid state reaction method. to the compound crystallized in a monoclinic structure, space group P21, consisting of SrO9-10, MgO5 and PO4 polyhedra. K2Mg2Sr3(P2O7)3 compound exhibits a high reflectance in the wavelength range of 310–800 nm. To test its potential as a luminescent host, Eu2+ and/or Mn2+ doped K2Mg2Sr3(P2O7)3 phosphors are synthesized and studied. Upon near UV light irradiation, K2Mg2Sr3(P2O7)3:Eu2+ phosphor shows bright blue emission with a peak at 422 nm due to the 4f65 d1–4f7 transitions of Eu2+ ions. K2Mg2Sr3(P2O7)3:Eu2+,Mn2+ is found to be a blue-red dual-emitting phosphor and the emitting color can be tuned from blue to red purple by controlling the doping level of Mn2+. The results indicate that K2Mg2Sr3(P2O7)3:Eu2+,Mn2+ phosphors were promising material for applications in near-UV LEDs.
