The Irish Churches Peace Project was an EU funded project undertaken collaboratively by the four biggest denominations in Northern Ireland and the Irish Council of Churches. Over two years it engaged with hundreds of church leaders and church members to stimulate good relations and community engagement, particularly in areas where churches had not previously engaged across community divisions. This article records the methodology developed by the project to encourage and deepen cross-community engagement, explores the operant and espoused theologies of reconciliation associated with the project, and highlights key insights as to utilizing the potential within religious traditions for overcoming conflict and division. ICCP’s experience is applicable to future projects in Northern Ireland and other contexts in which divisions within communities are sustained by religious difference.
