Book review: Linguistic Pragmatics of Intercultural Professional and Business Communication

Intercultural communication is becoming increasingly prevalent in multicultural organizations as a result of the close international business ties formed through the ongoing process of globalization. In intercultural communication, a vitally important issue is rapport management among people with different national identities in the professional sphere. The traditional way of dealing with this issue is to eliminate cultural heterogeneity through management (Youssef and Christodoulou, 2018). However, recent studies have suggested that management should also consider verbal and nonverbal communication (Bilali et al., 2018). The reason is that linguistic communication is closely related to sociocultural and professional identity (Du-Babcock and Feng, 2018). As such, it is important to acquire both intercultural background knowledge and linguistic knowledge in international and cross-cultural management (ICCM) (Khvesko and Basueva, 2018; Moore, 2016). Accordingly, Malyuga and Orlova examine intercultural communication in the professional sphere in terms of communicative strategies and linguistic manipulative tactics, within the framework of linguistic–pragmatics.
