The library of the Royal Scots College of Salamanca, Spain, holds a previously unknown volume of eleven early modern English plays, shelved with works of philosophy rather than literature. The volume, which is without a title or any other markings on the cover or endpapers, comprises (in order of collation) Fletcher and Shakespeare’s The Two Noble Kinsmen (1634); Thomas Goffe’s The Raging Turke, or, Bajazet the Second (1631); Lewis Machin and Gervase Markham’s The Dumbe Knight (1633 [1608]); George Chapman’s The Tragedie of Charles, Duke of Byron, Marshal of France (1625 [1608]); Thomas Heywood’s The Rape of Lucrece (1630 [1608]); John Martson’s The Insatiable Countesse (1631 [1613]); Thomas Middleton’s The Phoenix (1630 [1607]); John Day’s The Ile of Gulls (1633 [1606]); Philip Massinger’s A New Way to Pay Old Debts (1633); and two plays by Thomas Tomkis, Lingua, or the Combate of the Tongue (1632 [1607]), and Albumazar (1634 [1615]). Some of the plays are missing the title page; others, part of the fifth act; six bear marginalia and inscriptions in seventeenth-century hands;11 and Lingua, a stamp on H4r. The calfskin on the spine has cracked on the left and curled back at the bottom despite four raised bands with blind ruling on either side. On the spine is pasted a blue label or tag bearing an old shelf mark, ‘U 5/20’, over the remains of an older beige label on which ‘-uxo-’ or ‘-uzo’ is faintly visible on the right-hand side. Discoloured paper, dirt, and ink marks (intentional or otherwise) suggest that the plays have seen a good deal of use; and some text has been lost to cropping, especially in Lingua. Placement of the two Tomkis plays together at the back of the volume suggests that whoever commissioned the binding knew him to be the author.

托马斯·戈夫(Thomas Goffe)的《愤怒的土耳其人》(The Raging Turke),或《巴哈兹二世》(Bajazet the Second,1631);刘易斯·马钦(Lewis Machin)和赫尔瓦瑟·马克汉姆(Gervase Markham)的《邓贝骑士》(Dumbe Knight,1633 [1608]);乔治·查普曼的查尔斯Tragedie,拜伦公爵,法国元帅(1625 [1608]); 托马斯·海伍德(Thomas Heywood)的《卢克莱斯(Racrece)强奸》(1630 [1608]);约翰·马丁森(John Martson)贪得无厌的伯爵夫人(1631 [1613]);托马斯·米德尔顿(Thomas Middleton)的《凤凰城》(The Phoenix)(1630 [1607]);约翰·戴(John Day)的《海鸥岛》(The Ig of Gulls)(1633 [1606]);菲利普·马辛格(Philip Massinger)的“偿还旧债务的新方法”(1633);还有托马斯·汤姆基斯(Thomas Tomkis),林瓜(Lingua)或《舌头之交》(Combate of the Tongue)(1632 [1607])和白宫(1634 [1615])的两部戏。
