Most of Andrew Marvell’s works printed after the Restoration pose bibliographical challenges of the kind associated with the frequently disrupted operations of the literary underground. Of these, Mr. Smirke (1676) has long seemed the most intractable. Indeed, Nigel Smith thought that the work defied bibliographical conventions to the point of making ‘definitive description impossible’.1¹ These difficulties have been analyzed successively by Mary Pollard, Beth Lynch, Annabel Patterson, and, most recently, the present author and Steph Coster.2² The crux of the bibliographical puzzle is that two gatherings, F and H, appear in a combination of settings distributed between the first edition (Wing M873 and a variant issue, M873A) and the second edition (Wing M873B) in such a way as to bring into question whether the terms ‘first’ and ‘second’ even apply here. M873 and M873A—excluding from consideration for the moment their title pages and the prefatory note ‘To the CAPTIOUS READER’—are identical apart from gatherings F and H. While gathering F in M873A does feature an inner forme, as well as part of the outer forme at F4v, identical to that in M873, the remainder of it has been reset. At the same time, gathering H in M873A has an inner forme, as well as part of the outer forme at H1r, identical to that in M873B. Moreover, the setting of the remainder of outer forme H in M873A differs from that found in either M873 or M873B. The question, then, is how M873A can possibly feature elements of M873 and M873B—both the first and the second editions—as well as elements found in neither?
