In the final scene of ‘De La Courtine à Vichy’, the second volume of Phạm Duy Khiêm’s two-part novel about a Vietnamese colonial subject who volunteers to fight for the French at the beginning of the Second World War, the narrator finds himself wandering the streets of Marseille, looking for a place to spend the night. His short-lived career as a soldier has come to an end following France’s surrender to Germany, and he has travelled south in the hope of making his way back to Indochina by boat. Exhausted and unable to find a room, he returns to the train station, where he decides to seek help from an unlikely source: the woman working in an office devoted to ‘[la] Protection de la Jeune Fille’.1¹ ‘Un petit réduit’, he writes,
