This collection of seven recordings offers a fragmentary insight into the riches of the musical repertory produced or widely known in the Low Countries between the ends of the 16th and 18th centuries. From 1586, this region was the setting of the civil and religious Eighty Years’ War, which ended with a political and confessional split in the country. The southern Netherlands, whose territory corresponded to present-day Belgium, Luxembourg and the north of France, remained under Spanish control (then Austrian control from 1713) and faithful to Catholicism, whilst in the north (present-day Netherlands), the new Dutch Republic adopted Calvinism as the official faith, whilst nonetheless tolerating the coexistence of other confessions under certain conditions. This characteristic of the northern territory led to a burgeoning of diverse musical forms, to which the musical works of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562–1621), explored broadly in this series of recordings, bear emblematic witness. In addition to two recordings almost exclusively devoted to this ‘Orpheus of Amsterdam’, as his contemporaries nicknamed him, the other five recordings explore a variety of musical works, often brimming with foreign influences, written by composers of renown, but also by little-known figures whom these discs seek to return to the fold.

低地国家的音乐(c.1580–c.1780)
