ABSTRACT
Though ostensibly about the emergence of the infamous Batman villain, Joker eschews traditional comic book tropes and fantasy, instead grounding Joker’s story in a recognizable realistic world devoid of superpowers or heroes. The film’s sound design, and in particular its constant barrage of ambient noise, is a crucial component of this portrayal. It serves both to create the decaying city environment in which Arthur Fleck becomes Joker, and to help the audience understand how this ‘nobody’ becomes a notorious killer and the hero of Gotham’s nascent revolution.
