Plasma physics suffered great losses during the recent year. This includes Ken Golden (November 24, 1932–August 18 2020), for an obituary, see Ref. [1] and Vladimir Evgenevich Fortov (January 23, 1946–November 29, 2020). Fortov was a leading figure in nonideal plasmas, shock compressed matter, and dusty plasmas. Aside from his extensive scientific contributions he earned high recognition for preserving Russian science in the chaotic post‐soviet years and for his unique contributions to Russian‐German scientific collaborations. This is reflected in two obituaries in our journal.[2, 3] In addition, CPP is devoting a special issue on nonideal plasmas to the memory of V.E. Fortov (see below).

The ongoing Covid‐19 crisis has put extreme pressure on all researchers in plasma physics all over the world. Despite all problems, CPP editors assured a stable functioning of our journal. Our authors did not experience significant delays in manuscript handling, with very few exceptions. I am very grateful to our referees and all our editors, as well as to the journal staff who made this possible. The current pandemic has led to a cancellation of most national and international conferences in plasma physics. Others switched to an online format. This includes conferences that traditionally publish their proceedings in CPP. To compensate for those missing topical issues, the editorial board has decided to arrange for separate special topical issues of our journal that will be a valuable resource for plasma physics researchers. At the moment, submissions are invited to three Special Issues:
  1. Special issue “Simulation of Correlated Fermions and Quantum Plasmas”, guest editor Tobias Dornheim (Casus, Görlitz),
manuscript deadline: March 1.
  1. Special issue “Physics of Nonideal Plasmas – memorial issue for Vladimir E. Fortov”, guest editors Michael Bonitz (Kiel), Igor Iosilievskiy (Moscow), Victor Mintsev (Moscow), Ronald Redmer (Rostock),
manuscript deadline: May 1.
  1. Special issue “Quantum Hydrodynamics for Quantum Plasmas”, guest editors Giovanni Manfredi (CNRS Strasbourg) and Michael Bonitz (Kiel),
manuscript deadline: June 1.

As mentioned in the most recent editorial,[4] CPP was among the first journals to broadly offering free open access to a large fraction of authors via the consortium Projekt DEAL.[4] We are satisfied that many authors took this opportunity. As a consequence, the visibility of scientific results published in CPP increased significantly since 2019 which is manifested in a substantial increase of article downloads.

Our editorial board is continuing its efforts to provide the best possible service to authors and the plasma physics community. Our focus is on improving the scientific quality of published research articles enforcing our high standards that were described in a recent editorial.[5] About 50% of the manuscripts have to be rejected without external review. At the same time, authors are encouraged to thoroughly revise their work removing all critical issues. In that case, our editors are ready to give those new manuscripts full consideration – an opportunity that has been used by a substantial number of authors. Aside from quality, our second major objective is rapid manuscript handling. The average time from submission to publication in CPP is among the shortest in the field. Moreover, authors contributing to special issues do not have to wait until all other submissions have been processed. Manuscripts are published online (“Early View”) shortly after acceptance and receive a DOI, so they can be cited immediately, even before inclusion into a journal issue.

Finally we note another novelty: CPP now requires authors to include a data handling statement in their manuscript. The goal is to enable reproducibility and verification of data, methodology, and reporting standards. Therefore, our journal now expects that data supporting the results in the paper will be archived in an appropriate public repository. Authors are required to provide a data availability statement to describe the availability or the absence of shared data. When data have been shared, authors are required to include in their data availability statement a link to the repository they have used, and to cite the data they have shared. Whenever possible, the scripts and other artefacts used to generate the analyses presented in the paper should also be publicly archived. If sharing data compromises ethical standards or legal requirements then authors are not expected to share it.

The editorial board is looking forward to receiving your excellent manuscripts, rapid research letters or proposals for special issues.

Michael Bonitz, for the editors.
