nities. Many people today do not realize the Missouri River reservoirs flooded the most productive portions of several tribal reservations, destroying livelihoods and communities. Baker looks specifically at the destruction of Likea-Fishhook Village and tribal farmland inundated by the Garrison Reservoir in North Dakota. His chapter is poignant; the picture (Figure 14.3) of George Gillette, chair of the tribal business council, weeping at the forced signing of the final documents appropriating tribal land of the Three Affiliated Tribes captures the tragedy for all Native Americans along the Missouri and the irreversible effects of the Missouri Basin dams on people’s lives. On a lighter note, Dave Gradwhol’s well-illustrated chapter provides an insider’s view of fieldwork and crew life on Missouri Basin projects and on the reservoir projects, he later directed in Iowa. Funny, erudite, Gradwohl is always a great read. The volume ends with Frank McManamon’s thorough review of the evolution of salvage archaeology into modern CRM. In my opinion, one of the most important pieces of legislation resulting from the evolving federal and state archaeology programs is the 1970 California Environmental Quality Act, which went unmentioned by any of the authors in this volume. The chapters in the volume stand alone. Some readers may wish to start with McManamon, then read Thiessen et al.’s chapter, for example. Together both chapters provide a full historical review and perspective of the RBS of IASP, including the role of the Committee for the Recovery of Archaeological Remains in the formation of modern archaeological research in the United States. Editors Kimball Banks and Jon Czaplicki have done an excellent job in capturing the immensity of this nationwide program, and the diversity of projects through regional summaries provided by many of the archaeologists who participated in one manner or another in RBS work. I highly recommend this book.
