ABSTRACT This article surveys and reassesses a series of problems in the transmitted text of The Dream of the Rood (ll. 9b, 17b, 47b, 70a, 71b, 91a, 117a, and 142a), then reconsiders several special topics bearing on the poem's textual criticism (the theory of composite authorship, metrical aberrations in lines 78–156, and the relevance of the Ruthwell Cross inscription). It demonstrates that these issues are not dealt with adequately in the most widely used editions of the poem, and it aims to supplement the available commentaries by providing a more coherent set of solutions to the peculiar set of problems surrounding the poem's text.
