Sydney Clouts: Poet’s Poet … and More?
Current Writing: Text and Reception in Southern Africa Pub Date : 2018-01-02 , DOI: 10.1080/1013929x.2018.1439862
Michael Chapman

I examine Sydney Clouts's poetry from a post-apartheid, post-Cold War perspective. His poetry was written primarily in South Africa's ‘silent decade’ of the 1960s and appeared, first in 1969 and, more substantially, in ‘collected form’ in the crisis-ridden years of the mid-1980s. To many, he seemed to function outside of socio-political time and could be described as a ‘poet's poet’. My contention is that, if indeed Clouts is a poet's poet, he is more than that. I conclude that more variegated times today might offer a more conducive context than the mid-1980s for an appreciation of Clouts's quite unusual, even startling poetry.
