dissolution of royal marriages are contained inDissolving Royal Marriages, which also provides extensive (and brilliantly executed) translations of relevant documents, while the present volume allows for a razor-sharp focus on d’Arvray’s own analysis. It also allows a different approach to translations. The translations in Dissolving Royal Marriages provided an insight into the development of papal thinking and language, but in Papacy, Monarchy and Marriage d’Avray adds translations that focus on the development of the formal shape and layout of papal decisions to underpin his insights concerning the increasing formality of the process of marriage dissolution and the increasing sophistication of the grants of papal dispensations. The development of the Church’s interpretation of the purpose, place and practice of marriage is not an easy topic and this book has been criticised by some for being written in dense, almost impenetrable prose. However, I found it an exciting and stimulating read. However, it is not an easy read, and many of the points that d’Avray makes are subtle and difficult for the untrained to grasp. Having said this, I am happy to report that, despite initial reservations, the final-year undergraduate students to whom I assigned the book told me at the end of term that they had ultimately found it clear and lucid and praised the monograph highly. On its own, this volume is an impressive rethink of the development of the Church’s incest rules and their application. With its sister volume, Dissolving Royal Marriages, it is likely to stimulate discussion (and student engagement) for years to come.
