the volume’s most extensive analysis of how the effects of gender can intersect with the effects of class and race. She compares the debates over the regulation of night work for women in the global north with the debates over bonded labour for women in the global south to explore the origins of the current international situation by which protective labour legislation for women has largely been replaced by what Zimmerman characterizes as ‘forms of gender-equal labour law that offer few safeguards against large-scale and increasing exploitation of the labour of either sex within a highly racialized and unequal global division of labour’ (420). If Jacques’s and Wecker’s essays work together with many of the other pieces in the volume to show how far women still have to go in search of full equality in the family and society, Zimmerman’s essay offers a cautionary note that even equality with men may not be sufficient to provide women with a decent living or a good life as long as labour conditions are so difficult for so many workers around the world. Kimble and Röwekamp’s comprehensive collection of essays on European women’s legal history offers the basis for new comparative insights into topics as various as women’s fight for access to the legal professions, women’s campaigns for legal equality and autonomy within the structures of marriage and the family, and many other aspects of women’s national and international struggles for full citizenship. The individual essays are simultaneously sophisticated enough for scholars to learn from and engaging enough for students to enjoy. The entire volume should be mandatory reading for anyone with an interest in women’s history, legal history or family history.
