However, the influence of religion was only one factor in the history of divorce law. The legal issues and political aspects were arguably more important factors in the divorce law reform process. Even though Holmes’s focus is primarily on providing a religious history of divorce, some detailed explanation of the legal and political issues would have been helpful. This addition would have provided a more comprehensive understanding of the history of divorce, otherwise the religious aspects feel overstated. Nevertheless, Holmes offers a fascinating and well-researched account of the Church of England coming to terms with the question of divorce.
