Abstract

Data on secretory glycoproteins (ependymins (Epd)), the main protein constituents of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in teleost fish, are analyzed and summarized. In addition to the well-known functions of proteins (involvement in the processes of learning, memory consolidation, and nervous-tissue regeneration), data on the new functions of Epd that have been obtained in recent decades (involvement in the cold acclimation of teleost fish, as well as in the regulation of fish aggressiveness and social status, seasonal reproductive cycles and migration processes, painful and pathological organism states, and some other states) are given. The molecular mechanisms of the involvement of Epd in the regulation of various adaptive physiological and behavioral responses in teleosts are supposed.
