Effect of scanning strategy on geometric accuracy of the circle structure fabricated by selective laser melting

In this paper, the method of “line to layer to part” was adopted to establish the theoretical models of the circle structures with different scanning strategies in selective laser melting. The prediction of the geometric accuracy of the circle structure was performed by using these models. Under the 90° rotate scanning strategy, the surface morphology of the circle structure represents as a series of steps with different sizes and the homogeneity of the dimension distribution is poor. Under the 67° rotate scanning strategy, although the circle structure has a nearly uniform dimension distribution, the surface morphology is still uneven and there are some punctate protuberances on the inter-layer. Under the “skin-core” scanning strategies with 90° and 67° rotate “core” scanning, the surface morphologies and the dimensions of the circle structures are almost the same. The surface morphology represents as a series of unconspicuous uniform steps and the homogeneity of the dimension distribution is good. Then, the experiments of SLMed Ti6Al4V circle structures were carried out to verify the theoretical models. The results show that the prediction and experimental results had a good correspondence, and the mismatch between them was less than 20 μm. These results provide a guideline for improving the accuracy of SLM technology.
