Authors’ Introduction

Mixed methods studies on classroom teaching and students’ learning systematically explores the effectiveness of different instructional strategies, students' behaviours, and classroom dynamics. These studies often employ classroom observation methods as their data collection mechanism for understanding and evaluating these practices. Prior research studies have favoured the use of observation protocol for such evaluations. However, in the presence of multiple observation protocols, researchers often struggle in deciding which observation protocol is well suited for their study goals. The absence of a common point of comparison also makes these decisions harder. This paper provides a comparative overview of eight observation protocols used in postsecondary classrooms. By using a systematic review approach, the paper highlights the difference between protocols on context, focus, features, research perspective and validity.
