Despite the Covid‐19 pandemic, 2020 was a successful year for Structural Concrete. The Impact Factor increased up to 2.174 and the number of paper submissions amounted to 835, compared to 587 in 2019. I could manage this impressive number of paper submissions thanks to the support of Akio Kasuga, Deputy Editor‐in‐Chief, and Frank Dehn, David Fernandez‐Ordoñez and Tamon Ueda, the three Associate Editors‐in‐Chief.

Since some time already, we are faced with a substantial backlog for SC, which means an increasing number of papers that are available in early view online, but not printed yet in an issue. We have discussed this matter with Wiley, and we came to the solution of an online supplemental issue, which will be designated as 1S and which will only be available online. This issue could be the first step in a gradual transition to fully online publishing, which will probably take place in the coming years. For this special issue, we have selected 82 papers related to various material aspects such as recycled and special aggregates, geopolymer concrete, additions and admixtures, mechanical properties and durability.

For several years already, we see a significant increase in the number of full‐text article downloads, which amounted to 114,000 in 2020 or an increase by 65.8% for downloads via Wiley Online Library compared to 2019.

The increased number of submissions also means that the number of required reviews increased accordingly. My sincere thanks to all the reviewers for their valuable contribution to the review process. We will soon update the membership status of the Editorial Advisory Board, which consists of reviewers who performed a minimum number of reviews in the past year. Thanks to the efforts of our reviewers, the mean time between submission of a paper and the first decision could be reduced to 51 days in 2020, an improvement compared to 61 days in 2019.

We cordially invite you to stimulate your colleagues to submit high‐level papers to our journal and we especially welcome papers related to challenging concrete projects from your country. Writing a Short Project Note of 2 or 3 pages, really requires a very limited effort. And, don't forget to include papers published in Structural Concrete, in the reference list of your papers published in other journals.

OnlineOpen, Wiley's hybrid open access offering, grew from 4 articles in 2018 and 7 in 2019 to 31 articles in 2020. We hope to see continued growth in this area, supported by ongoing marketing campaigns to educate authors on the benefits and availability of open access publishing in Structural Concrete.

Finally, I would like to draw your attention to some online features which have been implemented for some time already:

Early view (weblink), which allows you to see accepted papers in their final lay‐out before the printed version is available. The mean time between final acceptance and early view availability was 32 days in 2019 and the aim of the publisher is to reduce this time to 11 days in 2021.

– All previously published papers are available online for fib members and external subscribers at the Wiley Structural Concrete page and can also be reached from the fib website.

– The Structural Concrete app, which allows fib members to look up and browse the journal's articles, to subscribe to specific keywords and to get the latest news from the fib directly on your phone. The app is available both on GooglePlay and on AppStore.
