pertinent impression is his encounter with Tenjō Sajiki, which he describes as “atonce familiar, or at least recognizable, andutterly strange” (Buruma, p. 13). It is this mix which Buruma explores in depth but on a personal level; unlike other memoirs this book constantly cuts through the predominant view of “exotic Japan” in favor of intelligent selfexamination and reaction. As a result, Buruma also avoids the sense of self-importance that is often found in these types of memoirs. Finally, it should be noted that Buruma’s writing style is clear, enjoyable, and compelling. While not a traditional scholarly work, A Tokyo Romance is a fascinating and highly readable memoir that explores the alternative theatre of Japan in the 1970s.
