ABSTRACT:Considering that the principle of non-intervention is a maxim in International Law, many scholars have studied why states are willing to commit to it and observe it, especially in the field of Human Rights. A systematic review of the causes is a helpful tool for those starting to revise the issue. As human rights are mostly accepted as universal, this article questions whether Western values have shaped Latin American states' compliance patterns, concluding that they owe it to their own history. Furthermore, the study asserts that human rights are associated with modernity rather than with "the West."
