Vol. 33, No. 4, December 2016 uncovers is the very gradual willingness to acknowledge domestic use of coal as a chief culprit in pollution’s causation. For decades public opinion resisted, wanting instead to blame industry in hopes that the emotional center of the home, the open fire in the hearth, would not have to be legislated. However, not until smokeless fuel was mandated in London homes did the situation begin to change significantly. The German architect Hermann Muthesius understood at the turn of the twentieth century in his book on the English house that the private house with its open fire on the hearth was at the center of English identity. This was what had to be overcome in order to defeat fog’s stranglehold on air purity. Although Corton’s chosen method of tracing a pea souper’s impact through fiction is less explanatory than her direct analysis, the ambition to see what metaphor can reveal yields a well organized history that conveys the changing emotional and psychological climate accompanying London’s devastating fogs, with their implacable toxicity and frightening ambiguity.
