“What I’m Aspiring to Be Is a Good Dramatist”: Alecky Blythe in Conversation with Chris Megson

Alecky Blythe is a multi-award-winning performer, playwright, screenwriter, director, researcher, and editor. Her company Recorded Delivery was established in 2003, and is renowned for its verbatim theatre productions in which edited recordings of interviewees are played live to the actors through earphones in performance. Its first show, Come Out Eli, was staged at the Arcola Theatre in 2003 and explored the community response to a siege in Hackney that took place the previous year. Over the past fourteen years, she has made verbatim theatre on a huge span of subjects ranging from the experience of living in Brussels (I Only Came Here for 6 Months, Brussels, 2005) and the employment of migrant workers in Herefordshire (Strawberry Fields, UK tour, 2005) to the sex lives of the over-50s (Cruising, Bush Theatre, 2006) and the Wimbledon Tennis Championships (All the Right People Come Here, New Wimbledon Theatre, 2005). Her work has been performed at the Arcola, the Almeida, the Assembly Rooms, the Royal Court, the National Theatre, and in many other places including a pod of the London Eye. The extraordinary ascendancy of verbatim theatre-making in the UK over the past decade and a half is due in large part to Blythe’s innovation and influence. In this interview, conducted by Chris Megson, Blythe discusses two of her major productions: London Road and Little Revolution. The former is a verbatim musical created by Blythe, with the composer Adam Cork, about the response of the local community to the serial murders of prostitutes in Ipswich in 2006. London Road opened to wide acclaim at the Cottesloe Theatre in 2011, transferred to the Olivier Theatre in 2012, and was adapted into a film released in 2015. Little Revolution sought to address the riots in English cities that erupted in 2011 by focusing on the experience – once again – of the residents of Hackney. The play opened in 2014 at the Almeida Theatre, with Blythe playing the part of herself, and included a chorus of 34 local citizens recruited from Hackney, Islington, and other London boroughs.
