In this engaging rereading of The Picture of Dorian Gray, Wilde is not critical of mass-produced art such as books, plays, and mechanical reprints of paintings; rather, he suggests how they spread art to a wider audience. According to Zieger, it is not until Dorian forsakes bourgeois, mass-produced art forms in favor of outdated, aristocratic models that he meets his downfall. Finally, Zieger’s coda draws more explicit associations between nineteenth-century media consumption and current technological habits. For example, she compares nineteenth-century advice columns to Google searches, salacious cigarette cards to internet porn, and Dorian Gray’s obsessive rebinding of Lord Henry’s book to colorful phone covers. More specifically, the coda reiterates her argument that, in the nineteenth century and today, mass media irrecoverably infiltrates our lives at the most intimate level, creating a need for ever more exposure to it. “Since complete disconnection from the information economy would lead to economic dysfunction and social isolation,” she notes, “the constant compulsion to check updated information becomes a chronic condition to be managed,” eliciting affective responses to the media itself (210). Rather than creating mindless consumers, these affective responses link consumers to larger discourses about technology, knowledge, and the circulation of both.
