Heart Stays Country: Meditations from the Southern Flint Hills by Gary Lantz
Western American Literature Pub Date : 2019-01-01 , DOI: 10.1353/wal.2019.0042
Jim Hoy

216 Gallagher’s artful poem “As a Diamond,” one may well balk at the coalfi red poetics of her “hearth where blackest coal / noiselessly witnesses two wordsmiths” (329). Th e fi gure (coaldiamond, lifepoem) is apt but oblivious. Going forward, environmentally woke poets will need to imagine coal diff erently or leave it in the ground. Th inking Continental has the inevitable Mercator enlargements and distortions of such a project (a wealth of native and Irish poets and essayists; a scarcity of urban cartographers). But with its novel conjunction of scientists and artists, this collection is not only a groundbreaking but also a wavemaking model of collaborative mapping.
