Abstract

The thermal oxidation of mixtures of moderate-temperature coal pitch and the anthracene fraction of coal tar is investigated. The microstructure of the coke produced from the oxidized pitch is analyzed. Analysis of oxidized pitch indicates nonlinear variation in their properties (yield of water on oxidation, softening temperature, yield of volatiles, fractional composition, and microstructure of the coke produced) with increase in content of the anthracene fraction in the initial mixture. To obtain uniform isotropic content, the content of the anthracene fraction in the initial mixture must be within the optimal range, so as to ensure the required proportions of the mesogenic components (from the moderate-temperature coal pitch) and nonmesogenic components of the secondary α2 (quinoline-soluble) fraction (from the anthracene fraction), thereby suppressing growth of the mesophase.
