As global politics becomes more complex, calls for expanding our repertoire of skills to deal with this complexity have a new urgency to them. The need to address old and new concerns simultaneously is a challenge. It has clearly required rethinking conventions and concepts, dusting off many of the assumptions about niggling issues that threaten security and nimble improvisation and innovation around new crises. Hence, we see states and communities concerned with safeguarding national interests, contributing to the common good and straining to fashion a world that can survive almost overwhelming new shocks, revealing an uncommon resilience. Our first issue for 2021 highlights all these concerns in different ways.
