might be lost in the clunky theories of the professional strategy triangle or the fact, analysis, judgment, or action 4-point model, which essentially requires students of media to assess their story types. While this is not in and of itself a wasted design, its application in real-world classroom pedagogy might not see much traction. However, the main issue here for me is what in fact is being converged. While digital and traditional newsrooms require new writing skills, online production, and cross-platform storytelling, there is also a convergence in content here of advertising and public relations. It may sit comfortably in media programs, but in journalism schools, a textbook containing this mix can be somewhat confusing to the new student. With the large amount of ground covered, the book stands in danger of convoluting the focused aim and obscuring the distinctiveness and writing style essential to master in each individual field. As a journalist and teacher, I believe this may prove somewhat difficult as a main text for the classroom: Students should be taught at this age to understand these types of writing differently, while assessing how to develop and execute them in divergent ways. Grouping them together, as is often done in this book, stands to add to the confusion for new students of media writing rather than helping them differentiate. The lack of critical thinking skills among today’s university students is rife and problematic. Instead, perhaps more time could be devoted to this during the exercise modules rather than in the process of deconstructing story types. The Basics of Media Writing: A Strategic Approach does some things well including demystifying the writing process, clarifying different social media advocacy campaigns, and delineating the differences in broadcast outputs and terminological practices. Yet while the book is trying to be all things to all media students, it might not be specialized enough for any one subject. The downside to producing a thorough, well-researched book about the media is that by the time it comes out in print, it runs the risk of sounding outdated. For professors teaching the literature, some material might bring media writing into the 21st century. For students looking to jump into the fast-moving media profession, however, it may feel 6 months behind the curve.
