Even in death, equality eludes the Dalits! This is borne out by a ‘news’ item published in several leading Indian newspapers and widely circulated online in August 2019 to reveal just the tip of an iceberg. As per the news, a funeral procession was seen lowering the dead body of a Dalit off a bridge in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu amidst reports that they were forced to do so because they were denied access to the cremation site along a road as the road to the site runs through private properties controlled by the ‘upper castes’. A probe has been ordered into the incident by the sub-collector of Tirupattur taluk where the incident occurred. ‘We are examining the situation. If required we would even find an alternate cremation site,’ she told a TV channel. Yes, as untouchability continues to prevail, the dead too need alternate routes to cremation sites, just as they need alternate cremation grounds! Death too is not a leveller, not even in the twenty-first century! The present number of the journal includes an array of articles ranging from theoretical analyses to empirical studies. Dalits’ search for religious identity is taken up in a couple of articles. Several articles attempt to unravel the ground realities of Dalit existence in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra. There is a comparative examination of Dalit marginalization in India and marginalization found in Africa. A study seeks to show how Sanskritization has resulted in comfortable exile and determined the perceived identity of the native people in the larger Indian society. Discrimination faced by the socially disadvantaged students with respect to corporal punishment is revealed in an empirical study, data of which was collected from schools of different managements in and around Pune city of Maharashtra. The shifting focus of the Naxalite movement in Bihar is analyzed through the caste and class struggles where the upper caste members oppress the lower caste groups. In another article, a detailed examination of hate speech is undertaken. A study attempts to empirically know the ‘representativeness’ of the Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) members of the legislative bodies as far as substantiveness of their representation is concerned by comparatively analyzing parliamentary questions raised by them and non-SC members of the parliament on the issues concerning the SCs. A fieldwork-based study seeks to unravel the extent of caste inequality in the contemporary agrarian economy of Bardhaman district of West Bengal. Further, an article on the adivasis’ movement attempts to understand the socio-economic and political structures, which forced the tribals in India to organize themselves and fight, since the 1940s, for the redressal of their grievances. These apart, there are a number of interesting articles and book reviews in this number of journal which we hope the readers will find engaging. Last but not least, we remind our readers that the views expressed in the articles are those of the respective authors, and the Editorial Board is in no way accountable for them.
