implication needs to be spelled out and traced through texts. Newton is a figure throughout the book, notably in Chapter Five, subtitled ‘The Newtonian Turn’. But this was no ‘Copernican turn’ as trenchantly described by Immanuel Kant in his Critique of Pure Reason (first edition 1781) and referred to by Wickman on pages 168–172; rather it begins as an invitation to conflate Newton’s Principia with fiction. Then, however, Wickman’s text settles down for a while, and deals with James Thomson’s poetic reveries about Newton and some of the diverse responses to Newtonian science among Romantic authors, Scottish and English. Here, as in his earlier discussion of Robert Burns, Wickman is instructive and precise. Then, however, he reaches for modernity, and the methodological issues with which the book began once again cloud the picture. In short, the three parts of the book are indicative of the whole. The first part, subtitled ‘Theorem: Shapes of Time’ has been discussed; the second part, subtitled ‘Scholium: Scenes of Writing’ is chiefly on the picturesque and on Burns’s writings; and the third part, as noted, is on the long eighteenth century, with a leisurely return to the present day. The long Scottish Enlightenment referred to in the book’s subtitle is richly described, but the methodological issues that cloud the first part, and all-too frequently bring in muddled allusions to mathematics and modernity, obscure the book.
