This statement, I think, is at the heart of Wolfson’s own book. She too uses words to plumb depths beyond words. Wordsworth, Shelley, Byron, Hazlitt, Keats, and with him Yeats, appear to us afresh as the authors of works inflected by a surplus of apparitional influences, hauntings and re-visions. This is a book in which Wolfson returns to texts and poets that are both the back catalogue and the present focus of her critical practice, demonstrating the haunting and enduring power of those words which matter to us most. Romantic Shades and Shadows is testimony to that recognition.

Heather Tilley,

Romantic Shades and Shadows
