The volumeBarbarian: Explorations of aWestern Concept in Theory, Literature, and the Arts edited by Markus Winkler and written together with Maria Boletsi, Jens Herlth, Christian Moser, Julian Reidy, and Melanie Rohner, takes the reader on a detailed historical journey of the ‘barbarian’ from the centuries of the Enlightenment up until the 20th century. The genealogical study is divided into four central chapters and organized in chronological order, examining the overall relevance of the ‘barbarian’ in theWest’s self-identification,while also exploring the complexity and ambiguity that the term brings with it through time and space in theory, literature, and the arts. The ‘barbarian’ has travelled through the histories of Europe and the West, helping shape their identities. However, the ‘barbarian,’ as MarkusWinkler rightly claims in his introduction, has nevertheless not been acknowledged as a “Grundbegriff” (1) of Western conceptual history. The ‘barbarian’ is a term of onomatopoeic origin in which “the etymology and the conceptual history [...] remain inextricably intertwined” (2). Thus, in order to examine the conceptual history of barbarism, Winkler delves into the etymological analysis of the term. He skillfully illustrates the difficulties implied in any attempt to deny connotations of incomprehension, rejection, or aversion with the onomatopoetic origin of the ‘barbarian’, as well as the curiosity and fascination that this incomprehension occasionally awoke (13). The root ‘barbar-’ (βαρβαρ) appears for the first time in Homer’s Iliad next to the term phoné (φωνὴ) in the compound barbarophonon (βαρβαροφὠνων) to refer to the accent of the Carians when they spoke Greek: “Νάστης αὖ Καρῶ ἡγήσατο βαρ-
