271 nors at the time the events transpired who might not want to be identifi ed. He does this again with a fourteenyearold victim of sexual abuse (76). Troublesome, too, is that although Edwards addresses some of the harsh results of government policy for Native Americans, he perpetuates a stereotype. Th e only individual in the book identifi ed as Native American is Al, “handsome and charming, with dark American Indian good looks” who liked to “drink, smoke, and play cards for money” (121). If you seek a nostalgic stroll through a past that might be yours (much of this book refl ects my experiences growing up at nearly the same time in a similar South Dakota community), you will enjoy this book. If you are an outsider by way of class, gender, or ethnic background, there may not be much you can relate to in Natives of a Dry Place. Steven J. Bucklin University of South Dakota
