81 settler colonial logics, however ingrained, can begin to be tangibly unraveled. In the fi nal chapters of Native Space Barnd turns from the provocative mundane to art that is meant to provoke. Barnd argues that Native art can “disrupt settler spatialities and . . . mark and reestablish indigenous geographies” (130). Edgar Heap of Birds’s installations, for example, mimic the form and placement of United States federal street signs. One of Heap of Birds’s signs displays the name “Alaska” in mirror image, then informs travelers, “Your host is Unangax̂,” disrupting assumptions of Alaska’s primary identity as a US state and reminding viewers of Native Alaskan sovereignty. Where the street signs Barnd opens with often serve to concretize settler space, Heap of Birds’s artwork unsettles it. Th roughout Native Space Barnd sets up important binaries between settler and Native space, but he is most interested in sites where these binaries waver, and in the spatial discomforts that result. His analysis rests on the critical reminder that Indianness and settler coloniality are intermingled and that signs, symbols, and rhetoric are likewise always connected to real, lived eff ects and tangibly manifested in our geographies.
